You can share your symbolic work with other MATLAB users as live scripts or convert them to HTML, Word, LaTex, or PDF documents. Your computations can be performed either analytically or using variable-precision arithmetic, with the results displayed in mathematical typeset. You can perform dimensional computations and convert between units. Symbolic Math Toolbox lets you analytically perform differentiation, integration, simplification, transforms, and equation solving. The toolbox provides functions in common mathematical areas such as calculus, linear algebra, algebraic and differential equations, equation simplification, and equation manipulation. In the MATLAB ® Live Editor, you can get next-step suggestions for symbolic workflows. You can create, run, and share symbolic math code. Some of the problems might just be bad input on my part as well.Symbolic Math Toolbox™ provides functions for solving, plotting, and manipulating symbolic math equations. It looks good and functionality will hopefully keep coming. It seems to multiply real valued matrices just fine, and is able to compute determinants, but not for minors of non-square matrices. It also doesn't seem to support finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and I think that's probably the most basic and important function you'd want as far as matrices are concerned. For non square matrices it doesn't do pseudoinverses, but that's not a big deal. It did work sometimes when I tried only real-valued matrices and gave a great step by step solution, but sometimes real matrices didn't work either so I'm not sure what was wrong. The Extended Symbolic Math Toolbox augments this. The basic toolbox also allows you to access functions in the Maple linear algebra package. In this case it might just be that I'm not giving it the right input. The basic Symbolic Math Toolbox is a collection of more than 100 MATLAB functions that provide access to the Maple kernel using a syntax and style that is a natural extension of the MA TLAB language. It doesn't seem like it can compute the Jordan normal form of a matrix, or for a diagonalizable matrix it can't diagonalise it. I don't remember everything I tried, but I just tried a few things now It works the same when teaching music: you really don't want to be playing exercises that aren't real music. When you solve as a part of a nontrivial problem, it doesn't matter much if the integral was solved by you manually, or by software: each integral is supposed to be a small part of the whole, and the mental work is in applying math, not solving simple pieces. Solving integrals for integrals' sake is incredibly mind-numbing.

Same approach IMHO applies to math: it's way more productive to know how to use the available tools to solve real problems than to do endless problems that mostly have nothing to do with the problems you're really after. When you teach carpentry, you don't expect every student to know how to make a hammer from the ore and wood they harvested themselves. I guess the real question is: instead of learning such basic math, perhaps the students should be learning the applications and deal with higher level, application-centered topics? The math is just a tool unless you want to be a mathematician. Waste even more time: /r/InternetIsUseless /r/AndroidIsBeautiful Was your post removed from here?
